Rich Riley, SVP & managing director Yahoo!

Despite your early age, you hold one of most important offices within the web giant Yahoo!. What's the "secret" of such a brilliant career?

"Thank you for the compliment. From the first moment that I walked into Yahoo’s offices in 1998, I was in love. It’s an exciting industry, incredible brand and amazing team. I have tried to stay focused on our customers and our team for all of these years and think that has helped me manage through dramatic growth and change in our company and industry".

You joined Yahoo! when it purchased Log-me-on.com. You were one of the founders of this company, active in the field of software for the internet. How does the idea of investing in web softwares rise in Nineties?

"It was a classic entrepreneurial example of starting a company to solve a problem that I was having. The Internet was growing rapidly and each site required a different username and password (some want 5 characters and a number, some want 7 character and 2 numbers, etc.) and I was trying to figure out how to make it easier to keep track of all my usernames and passwords. I partnered with a few very smart engineers to solve this problem. Initially we created a website that worked pretty well and then we pushed ourselves to take it to the next level. That is when we figured out how to create a utility that would be persistent in the browser. We quickly filed a patent on this and were fortunate that both Yahoo! and Excite were very interested in our technology. So we invented the toolbar, which has turned out to be a very important product used by hundreds of millions of people".

The US Department of Justice and the European Commission have just given the green light at the Yahoo!-Microsoft partnership. For the EU the aim is "increasing the competition in web searches and in search advertising area". How are Yahoo! and Microsoft going to compete with Google?

"Our partnership with Microsoft will combine our search marketplaces and thus create a stronger combined business. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will provide Yahoo! with the same search result listings available through Bing, and Yahoo! will innovate around those listings by integrating rich Yahoo! content, enhanced listings with conveniently organized information about key topics, and tools to tailor the experience for Yahoo! users.

Yahoo! will focus on providing a compelling and innovative search experience that allows people to find and explore the things, people and sites that matter most to them. While Microsoft will provide the underlying platform, both companies will continue to create different, compelling and evolving experiences, competing for audience, engagement and clicks.

Once the transition is in place, Yahoo! and Microsoft will each represent and provide customer support to different advertiser segments. Yahoo!’s sales team will exclusively represent and support high volume advertisers, SEO and SEM agencies, and resellers and their clients. Microsoft will represent and support self-service advertisers.

Furthermore the partnership will also create material cost savings for Yahoo! which we will be able to reinvest in our business".

How will the agreement with Microsoft materialise as for the search engine? Is Bing going to be enforced directly on your pages?

"Yahoo! Search will continue to be a major focus of ours and we will continue to innovate the experience. The partnership is for the back-end to be powered by Bing. So we will receive search results directly from Bing but then innovate and offer a differentiated consumer experience so that the Yahoo! and Bing experiences could be quite different".

Yahoo! and Twitter have just presented a very important partnership, straight afterwards Buzz presentation by Google. Is this merger for public show or is there a commercial agreement too?

"Yahoo’s goal is to be at the center of people’s online lives. We think that an essential part of this is making the Yahoo experience highly social. Our strategy is not to offer a social destination site that would compete directly with Facebook or Twitter. Alternatively, we want to partner with leading social networking sites around the world and integrate them into the core Yahoo! Experience. We think we can create a more relevant and compelling consumer experience this way. Yahoo! wants to offer a unique web experience based on openness, relevance and personalization to let users find quickly what matters to them most in their world and in the world".
